Yes, that's right. Kenya is now selling hiking holidays to local and foreign tourists alike. The country isn't new to adventure travel, but post-pandemic, it is the first time Kenya has decided to project itself as an all-accessible, outdoorsy, and worthwhile destination.

According to our sources, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has decided to add mountaineering into its adventure travel package for tourists. Hence, tourists from all over the world can now indulge in utterly rewarding physical activities. KTB's chief executive, Dr Betty Radier, stated that the department decided to include hiking because it is one of the best, least harmful, and enjoyable outdoor activities for the entire family.

"Hiking resonates with this time now. People don't want to spend all their time indoors, especially after the pandemic. When they get an opportunity, they want to go out. Hiking is not just about adventure but also wellness," said Dr. Radier.

The department further explained that they want to showcase the diversity and versatility of experiences Kenya can offer. Moreover, Radier believes that hiking holidays would become an integral part of the country's fitness tourism sooner or later.

"We are showcasing the diversity of experiences found in Kenya. This is also part of fitness tourism as travellers are keener on experiences that contribute to their physical fitness," said the KTB chief.

We all know that Kenya is the world's adventure hub. However, previously, adventure travel was slightly ignored by the ministry. Small tour operators used to escort tourists to the wilderness where they would walk with rhinos, watch birds in Meru, climb Mt. Kenya, camp around, and participate in various outdoor activities. All this while, the tourism ministry was busy glorifying safaris and beaches.

However, the department has realized the need of the hour. Hence, KTB is introducing an all-encompassing package offering travellers exclusive tours to never-seen-before remote areas and exploring the lifestyle and traditions of local communities. Radier claims that the ministry intends to rediscover the magic of Kenya.

"We are rediscovering the magic in our country. Nothing has changed. We are getting a bigger voice because travellers' preferences have changed, and they are always looking for different experiences, out of the norm," Radier added.

KTB will sell specific hiking locations, including the famous Mount Kenya, Nakuru, the Aberdare Ranges, Naivasha, and Northern Kenya, particularly Samburu's hills and mountains. In addition to this, the tourism ministry has included Baringo, Bogoria, Eldoret, Iten, and Kitale.

As per the tourism ministry, hiking is their chosen adventure activity as it complements the country's diverse destinations and experiences. The travellers will be taken across amazing landscapes, and well-kept nature reserves will welcome them throughout the trails and routes. Hiking will allow travellers to view the country's extraordinary wildlife and absorb its cultural diversity across the varied landscapes.

The previous year, there was an unprecedented increase in travellers booking hiking trips in Sleeping Warrior, Ngong Hills, and Mt. Longonot, probably due to travel restrictions and curfews. Other areas of keen interest for travellers in Kenya during the pandemic were Table Mountain, Mt. Kipipiri, Ragia Falls, Elephant Hill, and the magnificent trek that leads to the seven ponds in Aberdare.

Apart from hiking, the Kenyan tourism ministry unveiled as many as 29 new adventure experiences as part of the Magical Kenya Signature Experiences, promising outstanding travel experiences. Some of the experiences include the homestay experience in Nyandarua, yoga sunset experience in Watamu, the warrior academy in Mara North conservancy, and Kayaking in River Tana, River Athi, and Watamu.

"Kenya is an open canvas for those keen to create their own kind of magic and make unforgettable memories with family and friends. From the snow-capped mountains to open savannah, the tropical forests to vibrant cities and desert landscapes to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are the variety of experiences travellers are spoilt for choice," the Tourism Board's chief executive said.

She added that the KTB has collaborated with the private sector to showcase the country's diversity and curate an unforgettable experience for international and domestic travellers.
